Delilah

I had promised myself that I would tell Ryan the truth after the weekend was over. That Jackson had signed the divorce papers and technically there was no reason for us to be living together or pretending to be engaged anymore. But as the last day at the cabin starts, I can’t bring myself to tell him. I am too afraid of what that might mean for us.

Sure he likes me, but what if that is just because of us living together? We had gone from roommates to lovers in just a few months’ time. I don’t want to think about what it would be like to move out and be in a relationship, I enjoy what we have. But now I have no excuse to stay.

“Are you ready?” Ryan asks. We are going to take one last dip in the hot tub before we left.

“Yes.” I nod.

The hot tub is warm, the jets pulsing as we sink our bodies in. It is big enough for another two or three people but we cuddle on one side. He kisses my neck as I run my fingers through his wet hair.

“Do you think we’d be together if I didn’t show up on your doorstep?” I ask, and he stops kissing me.

“Where’d that come from?” He looks at me, questioning.

“I don’t know.” I shrug, but it is a lie. I think I need to know that somehow we would’ve found each other.

“No I don’t think so.” He frowns.

“Oh.”

“Clearly I’ve said the wrong answer, why don’t you tell me what you’re thinking?”

“It’s nothing.” I shrug.

“Dee, come on.”

“I’d just like to think that somehow, if I didn’t show up on your doorstep we’d find each other. It’s dumb.” I roll my eyes like I’m joking.

“Hey, if it’s how you feel it’s not dumb.” He takes my hands in his. “I’d like to think that, too, but I don’t know. I like that we are together because you showed up.”

“Really?”

“I didn’t think I’d find anyone after Celeste. I had basically given up on dating in general. So you showing up changed a lot for me,” he admits. I’m smiling from ear to ear at his admission.

“I’m falling for you,” I admit for the first time out loud.

“I’m here to catch you,” he whispers before planting a kiss on my lips.
